2018 Introduction

In 2012 my girlfriend at the time Sara and I were looking for an active adventure vacation. We were debating a few different things when by chance we happened to watch a movie called The Way. Note if you haven't seen the movie it's actually pretty good. Shit it ultimately led to one of the most incredible experiences of my life. Inspired by the movie we decided to travel to Europe and hike El Camino de Santiago (The Way of Saint James) via the Camino Francés (the French Way). It is a 490 mile route that runs from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port on the French side of the Pyrenees to Roncesvalles on the Spanish side and then another 780km on to Santiago de Compostela through the major cities of Pamplona, Logroño, Burgos and León. It took us just over one month to complete El Camino.

Sara wanted our friends and family back home to share in our journey so she set up an account on Travelpod and began to blog our journey. Sara blogged the first two entires including an introduction and a blog from Paris (we spent a week in Paris prior to the Camino). However by the time we hit the Camino she was over it and asked me to pick up the blogging duties. It was the first time I had ever done any blogging and it ended up being an enjoyable and therapeutic part of my Camino experience.

Sporadically throughout the years I would discuss my Camino adventure with various folks and share the blog with them. A friend had recently expressed a desire to hike the Camino and I went to share our travel blog with her and discovered that TravelPod was shut down. Turns out that TripAdvisor closed TravelPod in 2017! DOH! Therefore I am reposting our entires from the Camino in this "new" blog so I can reference my experience on the Camino when asked again.

So without further ado, please enjoy a Flashback to the initial Fink's Travels, El Camino de Santiago addition.

Hello to the family and three other readers. Josh here checking in from Spain to give a quick update on our Camino adventures to date... Note: I wrote this a few days into the Camino and my experience has obviously grown. Sara did a great job capturing some of our challenges in the previous post. We started in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France in cold, wet weather. The first day of our 800 km walk across Spain was set to begin. We read/were told that the first day would be the most difficult and four days into the trip this was definitely the case.  We had over a 1,000 meter climb up the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains over the course of 27 km.  It would be tough in any situation however being the first day on the Camino and carrying everything we needed for a month on our backs made it that much more challenging. Walk On

Thank you to everyone reading the blog! Sara and I really enjoy seeing all of your comments and likes. It's nice to get the feedback and every comment reminds us of home.  Muchos Gracias!  Today is May 6th. We have stopped for the evening in Sahagun at a decent hostel. Yesterday was a tough day; we reached a point mid-day with an option to stop after 20km or push forward to 37 km. As we want to make it to Santiago on time (we have to arrive by 5/21 - it is becoming a tight schedule) and are addicted to the physical and mental challenge of the longer distances, we of course decided to go for 37km. It turns out that this extra distance - the stretch from Carrion de los Condes to Calzadilla de la Cueza (17 kms) - is (1) one of the most boring stretches of the Camino with nothing but flat terrain and fields of wheat as far as the eye can see; (2) the longest stretch anywhere on the Camino between towns and (3) a stage that people often skip over via bus/taxi/etc. At...
